When people interested in Forex trading are about to go to college

When people interested in Forex trading are about to go to college, they often ask themselves what would be an optimal major that would help them with their future trading career? Wondering about the optimal education for a successful FX trading career is totally normal.

Even in our era of the foreign exchange market's popularity, it is nearly impossible to find a university that would teach BS or MS in "Forex trading". This means that you need to choose carefully what to study if you are going to apply it mainly to currency trading.

In reality, you have three principal options when choosing a Forex-related major in education:

Economics (let's lump in the finance major too here) is an obvious field of study to Forex traders, isn't it? Ultimately, the shifts in currency exchange rates are driven by economic factors. However, even though understanding of macroeconomics is crucial to fundamental analysis of the currency market, not all Forex rate movements can be explained with economics, especially short-term ones.

Math/statistics can be very useful for all sides of trading — automation, statistical analysis, understanding of macroeconomic reports, understanding of your backtesting results, and so on. The problem with choosing a major in math is that it can be a really difficult one for most people, and only a small part of knowledge gained will be practically applicable in Forex.

Computer science — extremely useful for automation of your trading (think about building your own expert advisors, indicators, scripts), but almost completely unrelated to Forex market itself. The only way getting a degree in computer science will help you to build a better strategy is by coding and testing multiple robots. Still, it is one of the best education pathways if you need a backup alternative for a full-time job in case your FX trading doesn't work out.

Of course, even if you get a degree in all three of the disciplines, you won't necessarily become a profitable trader. After all, Forex trading is less about learning and more about finding an edge and building a proper risk management system around it. However, even if you don't become a professional trader, you will have an education level that will help you get a better job and comprehend what you are doing as a part-time trader.
