Keep a Simple Home Workout Log Without Turning It Into Homework

A workout log does not need a complicated spreadsheet or a new app. A few useful notes can help you remember a session more clearly than trying to recall it several days later. The aim is to keep information you will actually use.

Record the basics

Start with the date and the exercises you completed. If you used dumbbells, note the load clearly, including whether it refers to each dumbbell or the pair. You can record sets and repetitions too, but there is no need to build a complicated scoring system before you begin.

Add one sentence about the session

A short comment can be more useful than a page of numbers. For example: “I paused the video between movements,” or “I need more room to put the weights down.” Keep the note specific enough that you will understand it next time.

Notice changes without demanding a record every time

A log can show changes in your routine, equipment or organisation. It does not have to turn every workout into a competition with the previous entry. Some sessions will involve learning a movement or adjusting a setup rather than adding weight or repetitions.

Choose one practical next step

Finish the entry with a small action: clear a different part of the room, check a dumbbell setting, or save the video at a section you want to review. Keep that action separate from a promise about results. Your notes should support the next session, not judge the last one.

Use the video as a reference

My 12-minute Fitness Guy home workout features curls, push-ups and standing knee raises. If you use it as inspiration, you can write down which movements you chose and how you adapted the session. You do not need to reproduce my whole workout to make your notes useful.
